Monday was a good day. Mom revamped the front room with things like new curtains, and a she also put a new bedspread in the bedroom. Tuesday was a bad day. There was a hail storm that damaged the garden and knocked a bunch of fruit off their fruit trees. There was apparently four straight days of rain. For Father’s Day we kids pooled our money and got Dad a new tool chest.
Mom and Dad had some trouble. Times like this were often connected to Dad’s bad decisions. It’s a pattern that had gone on occasionally throughout their marriage. She lamented, “More problems. Can’t bring myself to elaborate. It hurts too bad. I just feel my future is lonely and something inside me has shriveled up and died. I’m not making any plans for the future, just live one day at a time. Oh woman, don’t ever marry for animal attraction. Be compatible with the personality too. Have something in common to share and be sure he loves the Lord as much as you do, and has the same kind of friends.” For me it is a testament to her strength that in the end she made their marriage work despite these times of discouragement.
